PAAC Announces its 7th Annual Memorial in May

to be held in Wynne, Arkansas
On May 10 - 11, 2013, PAAC will
sponor its 7th annual Memorial in May Cemetery Preservation Conference. The
conference will be held at the Odell McCallum Community Center/Boys & Girls Club, located in Wynne, Arkansas..
Archeologists, historians, genealogists, cemetery preservationists, church secretaries, funeral home directors,
cemetery associations and those interested in learning the proper techniques in documenting, preserving, restoring,
protecting and properly maintaining Arkansas cemeteries and gravesites will gather for a two day workshop.
PAAC co-founder Tamela Tenpenny-Lewis will open the conference defining the purpose of PAAC and its dedication to the preservation
of African American cemeteries. Dr. Wilbert Gaines, Retired Emeritus Associate Professor (ASU) will share with us the struggles
and experiences of our forefathers, reminding us that we must reclaim our past in order to preserve our future.
Over the course of the two-day workshop, speakers will discuss issues concerning the difficulties individuals and communities
face restoring and preserving neglected cemeteries. Attendees will gain valuable information on the methods of locating,
identifying, recording, transcribing and documenting gravesites.
Opening the second day of the conference, members of various cemetery associations from around the state will share their
experiences of success and/or failure in reaching their goals of preservation. There will be discussions on the issues
concerning many that are losing or have lost cemeteries to development, vandals, or landowners that won’t allow access
to cemetery property.
